According to an Amazon spokeswoman, an online role-playing game based on the fantasy series Lord of the Rings, which was released in 2019, has been cancelled.
Amazon Game Studios collaborated on the game with China-based Leyou Technologies, which was purchased by Chinese tech giant Tencent in December.
According to Bloomberg, which cited people familiar with the situation, the ensuing contract negotiations resulted in a dispute between Amazon and Tencent, which ultimately resulted in the game's cancellation.
"We have been unable to secure terms to continue with this title at this time due to Leyou's recent acquisition by Tencent," an Amazon spokeswoman said in an email to Reuters.
She mentioned that the Amazon team working on the game would be reassigned to other projects.
Since its inception in 2014, Amazon Game Studios has failed to produce a profitable video game.
According to Bloomberg, the company has cancelled previously planned games Breakaway and Crucible, and another of its games, New World, has been repeatedly postponed.
According to Bloomberg, Amazon's video game division has suffered due to mismanagement and cultural clashes between game developers and the company's values.
Andy Jassy, Amazon's incoming CEO, said earlier this year that he was committed to the company's video games division, which was founded by outgoing CEO and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.
