According to people familiar with the situation, Apple Inc. is launching a campaign to assist workers in getting vaccinated against Covid-19.
Apple is collaborating with Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc. to administer shots to employees at the company's headquarters. The Cupertino, California-based technology behemoth is launching a website where employees can schedule appointments. The company previously informed employees that as a private company, it lacked access to Covid-19 vaccines for employees. Vaccine coverage in California, on the other hand, has increased significantly, and all citizens of the state are now eligible to obtain vaccines.
Previously, Apple persuaded staff to get vaccinated by providing sick leave for days missed while getting the shot and recovering from the side effects. More employees can return to Apple's offices in the coming months as a result of this new voluntary programme. Despite this, the organisation has not requested workers to quit, and signing up for a shot through the programme does not entail an impending return, according to the people. They requested anonymity while addressing personal matters. The initiative was confirmed by an Apple spokesperson.
Apple isn't the first large company to assist workers with vaccinations. Frontline employees at Amazon.com Inc. have been vaccinated. Other technology giants like Facebook Inc. and Google have been supporting vaccine distribution for the general public, especially in underserved communities. Apple recently added a button in its Maps app to help users find vaccination centers.
Unlike some of its competitors, Apple has not officially stated when workers can plan to return to work, but Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook has told employees that he expects a greater number of employees to return in June.
He told his workers last year, "There's no substitute for face-to-face teamwork, but we've learned a lot about how we can get our work done outside of the office without losing productivity or performance." Since the beginning of the pandemic, Apple has had some mission-critical personnel working in the office. Some engineers have also returned to work for a small number of hours per week for months.
