Apple was targeted in Ransomware Attack.

Although Apple was preparing for its 'Spring Loaded' event on Tuesday, April 20, a ransomware operator requested that the company pay a ransom to prevent data about its next-generation devices from being leaked. On the dark Web, the group REvil, also known as Sodinokibi, claimed to have obtained access to Apple supplier Quanta Computer's computer network and requested $50 million (374.59 crores) to unlock its systems. The Taiwanese company is a major supplier of the MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and Apple Watch.

Hackers have begun circulating schematics that seem to be linked to the latest iMac and MacBook models. According to Bleeping Computer, the ransomware operator also warned Apple to buy back the available data by May 1 to prevent further data leaks.

In a comment to Bleeping Computer, Quanta Computer acknowledged an assault. However, the company did not say if it is in talks with the REvil community or whether any consumer data was compromised as a result of the attack.

“In response to cyber attacks on a limited number of Quanta servers, Quanta Computer's information security team collaborated with external IT experts,” a Quanta Computer spokesperson said. “Recent suspicious activities detected were reported to and smooth contacts were maintained with the appropriate law enforcement and data protection authorities. There will be no significant effect on the Company's operations.”

Although undertaking a thorough investigation, the spokesperson added that the company's information security defence system was immediately triggered. The company also stated that it has improved its cybersecurity and is working to improve its current infrastructure.
