A new widget has been added to the Microsoft Windows 10 taskbar. Weather forecasts and a news stream that can be fully customised to include topics of interest can now be viewed directly from the taskbar. The update was first tested with Windows Insiders, and it has now been approved for general release to all Windows 10 computers. The widget can show succinct, "snackable" information on news, sports, stocks, and traffic alerts, according to Microsoft.
Microsoft describes the latest taskbar's appearance and functionality in a blog post. Weather details will appear on the taskbar, and clicking it will bring up a content feed with news, markets, sports, and traffic alerts.
The new functionality will be included in the next Windows 10 update. Since January 2020, Microsoft has been testing this feature with Windows Insider participants.
The new Windows 10 taskbar widget shows details in the form of cards that users can personalise based on their preferences. By extending the widget and clicking on Manage interests at the top of the widget, they can add or delete topics. If users don't want to use the widget, they can switch it off entirely.
The update will be rolled out to customers in stages over the next few weeks, according to Microsoft. In the coming months, a larger rollout will be done.
In other Windows-10-related news, Microsoft has updated its Microsoft Store to include the Snipping Tool and MS Paint. The store can now be used to update these applications. For the time being, this is only available via Windows 10 Preview Build 21354 and is part of the Windows 10 Insider programme. MS Paint has also received a new icon to go along with it. Microsoft has been attempting to convert MS Paint users to Paint 3D since the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update in 2017.
